THE CHILDREN'S TAPESTRY STORY

These four tapestries were created as part of artist-in-residence programs which affirm the importance of the arts in education.
In each school, the children were asked to draw pictures related to a theme, and I selected a certain number for the final design. On my upright tapestry loom permanently set up in their main hallway, I taught two children at a time how to weave a small section of the tapestry. Each tapestry took between five to seven months to complete.
According to the many responses of parents and teachers, these projects not only helped the children appreciate and understand the artistic process from concept to finish, but also taught them the value of discipline and patience for achieving quality and beauty. Their self-esteem was enhanced by learning a new skill and the project stimulated school wide pride in an artistic endeavor to which all the children contributed.
Three of the four tapestries were created with the support of grants from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and ArtServe Michigan.
